How to Help
You can help by being part of the NECHAMA team. No matter what your age or physical ability, there’s a task you can do. Here are a number of ways NECHAMA volunteers can help.
Your name will be placed on our confidential volunteer database to be notified by email about disaster deployments. Generally, deployments may occur during the months of May/June until early October.
Volunteer with Nechama
General Operating Support - Help support NECHAMA’s work with a cash contribution. Your contribution goes to help maintain our equipment inventory and administrative staff. Also, we may sometimes use donated funds to purchase specific items that are needed to assist families in cleaning up and getting ready for rebuilding. Your contribution is fully tax-deductible. Make NECHAMA part of your regular charitable giving.
NECHAMA Designated Fund - You can help ensure the long term future of NECHAMA through our designated fund established with The Jewish Community Foundation - Minneapolis Jewish Federation. This is an endowment fund whose investment earnings will be used for NECHAMA's regular operating budget. Contact Steve Lear for details: slear@nechama.org.
Consider organizing a fund drive at your church or synagogue to emphasize the importance of reaching out to others in time of crisis. Also, sponsoring NECHAMA makes a wonderful theme for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah or other religious life cycle event. Contact us for details.
Donations can be made online through our donations page.

All deployments have various tasks connected to them. We don't want anyone engaging in an activity that is beyond their physical capability. Some examples of what NECHAMA does are chain sawing, removal of fallen trees, pumping water out of basements, removing contaminated effects from homes, tearing out drywall, pressure washing and sanitizing walls and surfaces, cleaning and pick-up of debris, or even just talking or lending moral support to people that were affected by the disaster. Once in the field, situations change very quickly. You may be asked to assist in any number of different ways.
Current Deployment Information
During times of disaster deployments we need volunteers to “work the phones” and get volunteers notified about logistics for going out to help. We also need people to continually help update our database and contact information on volunteers. People move. Email addresses change. You can keep our information current by searching out contact information and relaying it to our Volunteer Coordinator. We also have periodic mailings that require assistance in processing. So even if you can’t wield a chain saw or chop up a 10 ton tree , NECHAMA has a way you can help.
Contact the Volunteer Coordinator
Though our task and mission is a serious one, we like to have fun and feel good about what we do. Tell your family, friends and associates about NECHAMA. Encourage them to register and volunteer. Consider having your business or company schedule its community service activities by being a corporate participant in NECHAMA emergency deployments.
Perhaps you know persons affected by a natural occurrence requiring assistance in clean up to their home or property. NECHAMA will assess the need and determine whether to send a crew to help.

A NECHAMA representative is always available to meet your organization and talk about what we do and how we build the world through good community relations and kind deeds toward others. Call us for more information about scheduling speakers at (763) 732-0610.
NECHAMA works in alliance with the State of Minnesota Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM). In the event of a State or Federal emergency, the State’s command center in downtown St. Paul is activated and needs volunteers. NECHAMA works with the Department of Emergency Management to staff critical positions at the command center on a rotating basis. This can be very exciting and rewarding work.
Examples of volunteer needs are for the emergency hotline that gives out critical or advisory information to persons calling in with questions. Also, you may be asked to work with a logistics team providing needed supplies or transportation to people without vehicles.
Training is provided on-scene by experienced State emergency management workers.
